What does your business do?
We’re entertainment, art and media lawyers. We act for clients throughout the creative industries; the people and organisations we represent are diverse but include clients such as artists, performers, producers, advertising and creative agencies, galleries, festivals, publishers, producers, media companies and performing arts organisations.
The one thing that our clients usually have in common is that their businesses revolve around the works they create, and the need to protect and build on the rights and goodwill in those works. We’re here to help our clients do that – whether that’s by helping them with a contract, advising them on a legal issue or assisting them with a dispute.
What do you love about your business?
Personally, I love the problem solving aspect of our work. Our clients are often involved in innovative or unusual projects that require us to advise on uncommon areas of law or test existing conceptions of law against new technologies or ideas. In our area of law, you’re always dealing with new questions and interesting problems – it never becomes routine or repetitive.

How long have you been working with Generate?
We’ve been working with Generate since 2017 – so five years this year.
And what services do they provide to your business?
Generate provides us with assistance with our annual tax work and provides our monthly bookkeeping services.
What makes Generate different from typical accountants?
I find that Generate genuinely understand the industries that we work with, and the creative mindset, which makes an enormous difference in understanding Kay & Hughes as a business and our clients. The team at Generate are responsive, personable and nimble with new ideas and technology, which is what I look for in accountants. As another professional services business, I think there’s a lot of overlap in Generate’s business philosophy and the professional relationships they like to build with their clients, and how we approach our work at Kay & Hughes. I never find it difficult or time consuming to explain to Generate what my business is trying to do, or what we’re trying to assist a client with – that is a huge point of difference with other more traditional accounting firms.
Anything else to add?
Generate makes our accounting and finance more user-friendly, efficient and comprehensible, which allows us to focus on our work as lawyers and our clients. Generate’s systems and advice have allowed us better access to and understanding of our own business, which then allows us to use the Generate team for the more complicated tax and business questions. For example, Generate’s advice for us to adopt Xero has been invaluable, as it allows me to simply and easily check and create reports independently, without having to ask for those reports to be created. Their team is highly accessible, so if there’s a question or an issue that I need to speak to someone about directly, I never have any problem contacting the right person and getting the answer.
